Lawn Treatments for Dandelions

Chances are, you’ve gone outside to enjoy the recent beautiful weather, and noticed those lovely yellow weeds – dandelions. They’re an important part of children’s flower bouquet, and everyone loves to pluck them from the ground and blow on them once they’ve become white puff balls. But, if they’re not taken care of, they will spread very fast!

Dandelions have one of the longest flowering seasons of any plant. That’s why they pop up in the spring, continue through the summer, and are still around in the fall. After the flowering stage, the dandelion dries out and becomes the familiar white puff ball, which is full of seeds. Then, the wind simply blows the seeds away, and they fall on the ground, likely to continue another growth cycle if the conditions are favorable. (If they fall into your lawn, chances are the conditions will be just fine.) Unfortunately, just one dandelion going through its life cycle can spread enough seeds to cover your lawn.

Dandelion Weed Control in Pittsburgh

Dandelions are perennial broadleaf weeds, and if you’ve ever tried to pull them out of your yard, you’ve noticed that they pop right back up again—along with 3 or 4 others. They’re hard to eradicate, and just spraying some weed control in a few places in your yard won’t help. To control dandelions and prevent new ones from growing, you’ll need to have a lawn treatment program that’s designed to keep your yard lush, green, and beautiful.

That means that you’ll need broadleaf weed control applied in March/April, May/June, July/August, and then in September/October. These applications are needed because dandelion seeds will keep floating into your lawn from other places, like the side of the road or your neighbors’ lawns. It’s not uncommon for dandelion seeds to travel a few miles before settling down and growing. Having a properly treated lawn will also strengthen the roots of the grass, creating a dense lawn that will make it more difficult for dandelions to pop up.
